Important Changes to Roadworthy Inspections in the Northern Territory

What Brian Turner Automotive Customers Need to Know

From 9 February 2026, major reforms to roadworthy inspection requirements for light vehicles will take effect in the Northern Territory. These changes affect when your vehicle must be inspected and what inspections are necessary when transferring or registering a vehicle.

At Brian Turner Automotive , we want to make sure you understand how these changes impact you so you can keep your vehicle safe, compliant, and road-ready.

What’s Actually Changing?

Under the updated rules introduced by the Northern Territory Government, light vehicles will no longer need routine roadworthy inspections simply at registration renewal. Instead, inspections will only be required in specific situations — and only if the vehicle is 7 years old or older.

You’ll need a roadworthy inspection in the following cases:

  • When selling your vehicle or purchasing a used vehicle
  • When re-registering a vehicle that has been unregistered in the NT for more than 12 months
  • When first transferring a vehicle into the Northern Territory from interstate

Routine inspections for renewals are no longer required for most light vehicles once these changes come into effect.

Which Vehicles Are Affected?

This update applies to light vehicles under 4.5 tonnes Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM). That includes:

  • Cars and sedans
  • 4WDs and SUVs
  • Light vans and utes
  • Motorcycles
  • Trailers over 750kg

Smaller trailers (under 750kg) remain unaffected by these changes — they do not require a roadworthy inspection.

There are no changes for:

  • Heavy vehicles
  • Commercial Passenger Vehicles (CPVs)
  • Modified vehicles that already require specialist inspections

How Will Vehicles Be Checked Going Forward?

Instead of periodic scheduled checks, vehicles may be inspected:

  • Through on-road audits by authorised officers
  • At roadside inspection stops
  • When transferring or re-registering vehicles as required

If a vehicle is identified as unsafe, the driver may be issued a defect notice. This notice will require:

  • Completion of necessary repairs
  • Follow-up inspection at a licensed inspection station

Common issues that can trigger defect notices include:

  • Broken or worn tyres
  • Faulty brakes
  • Headlight or taillight faults
  • Oil leaks or excessive smoke
  • Loose body components
  • Incorrectly fitted accessories (like bull bars or oversized spotlights)

In serious cases, infringement notices (fines) may also be issued.

Change of Ownership — What You Need to Know

For vehicles requiring a roadworthy inspection:

  • The inspection result is valid for 6 weeks
  • Multiple ownership transfers can occur within this window
  • The new owner must lodge the transfer within 14 days
  • The seller must lodge the disposal notice within 14 days

If you are selling to a licensed dealer, a roadworthy inspection is not required.

For gifts, family transfers, or transfers from deceased estates — inspections are still required if the vehicle is 7 years old or older.

Interstate Transfers Still Require Inspections

Unlike some states, the NT does not accept interstate roadworthy inspections for light vehicles.

If you bring a vehicle from another state or territory:

  • You must complete a NT roadworthy inspection (if the vehicle is 7+ years old)
  • Then you must complete a compliance inspection for NT registration

Do You Still Need a Roadworthy at Registration Renewal?

If your renewal is processed before 9 February 2026 and an inspection is due — you will still need one.

If your renewal happens on or after 9 February 2026, and there’s no transfer or re-registration involved, you no longer need a routine roadworthy inspection.

Even though routine inspections are being phased out, you are still responsible for keeping your vehicle safe and roadworthy at all times.
